The Highland Scots lost a heartbreaker on Friday, dropping the Fredericktown series on an extra-inning loss to the Fredericktown Freddies. The Scots led by two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning when a routine play turned the game upside down after a couple of errors gave the Freddies a 1 run lead.

Senior right-hander Tate Tobin pitched a gem, going all 8 innings in a losing effort. Tobin allowed 2 runs in the first, but settled in and kept the Freddies offense off balance until the end of the game. Tobin struck out 9 Freddie hitters and allowed 5 hits in 8 innings of work. He allowed 2 earned runs in 8 innings of work.

Trailing 2-0 in the second, the Scots took the lead when Reese Weissenfluh singled to start the inning. After advancing on a passed ball, he was driven home by short stop Jarin Vasquez’s double to left field. A Liam Garrett single advanced Vasquez to third, before he scored on a Randy Cain ground out. Tobin’s RBI single would put the Scots up 3-2, as both teams would settle in for the next few innings.

The Scots would extend the lead in the 5th as Freddie outfielders misplayed back to back balls allowing Tobin to score another run.

The Scots undoing would be the 6th inning. Leading 4-2, Tobin hit two Freddie batters to put runners on 1st and second. With 2 outs, a routine ground ball turned into 2 throwing errors which allowed Fredericktown to retake the lead 5-4 heading into the final frame.
In the top of the 7th, senior Clay Matthews battled the Freddie closer fouling off multiple pitches before fighting off a single to left field. Junior Branton Howard replaced Matthews and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball. He would score when Mack Anglin blasted a double to left field, tying the game in the 7th.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Scots kept the game alive with a great play at the plate, Vasquez to Garrett before another Tobin strikeout. In the bottom of the 8th, another infield error allowed the Freddies to get into scoring position and score the winning run.

Highland will face Cardington on Monday and Tuesday before playing a Thursday double-header against Bloom Carroll at Ohio Dominican University.
