The Highland Scots opened up league play with a win over visiting East Knox on Monday by a score of 8-0. The Scots are now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in KMAC league play.
Junior Blake Jodrey was dominant in his start, going 6 innings for the home team and allowing only 2 Bulldog hitters to reach base in his outing. Jodrey struck out 8, allowed 2 hits, 0 walks, and no runs to help the Scots take the first game of the series. The right hander earned his first varsity win by facing 20 hitters and throwing less than 70 pitches.
Senior reliever Tyler Disbennett worked a scoreless 7th to secure the shutout for the Fighting Scots.
The Scots put up a 5-spot in the second inning to break the game open. After Kadin Johnson walked and Jodrey singled, sophomore right-fielder Brock Church laced a 2 RBI double into centerfield to begin the scoring. Church would score on Cooper Merckling’s 2 out single to left field, to make the score 3-0. Consecutive hits by Rider Minnick, senior Randy Cain, and senior Dom Carter stretched the lead to 5-0 once the inning was ended.
The Scots would add to their lead in the 5th inning when center fielder Zach Pinkerton ripped a double down the left line. He would score on Kadin Johnson’s triple to right field, his first career triple. Consecutive RBI singles by Jon Jensen and Cooper Merckling finished the scoring for the Scots.
The Scots defense sparkled again, with no errors in the field and no passed balls on catcher Luke Cain. The offense pounded out 12 hits by 11 different players. Cooper Merckling led the way with 2 hits, while Church, Pinkerton, and Johnson all contributed extra base hits.
Highland will conclude the East Knox (1-4) series with a return trip on Wednesday before beginning the Cardington (4-2) series on Friday.
