The Highland Scots remained unbeaten after a dramatic come from behind victory at East Knox on Wednesday. The win improves the Scots to 5-0 overall, and 2-0 in KMAC league.
Senior pitcher Wyatt Groves started on the bump for the Scots and continued his torrid start to the 2021 campaign. It was another quality start for the senior southpaw as Groves kept the Bulldog hitters off of the bases for most of the game. Groves finished with a line of 5.2 innings pitched, 1 hit, no earned runs, and 8 strikeouts.
The Scots scored early in the contest at junior shortstop started the game with a double in the left field gap. After advancing on a passed ball, Minnick would score on Kadin Johnson’s ground ball up the middle.
The Scots would add to their lead when Minnick would again walk and move into scoring position on a stolen base. Johnson would plate Minnick with a groundball on the infield to increase the lead to 2-0, Scots.
East Knox would tighten the score with a run in the 4th inning when a 2 out error allowed the Bulldogs to score. An error would also be the culprit that cost Groves the win, as Bulldogs would again score after a 2-out error in the 6th, this time to take the lead 3-2 over the Fighting Scots.
Going into the 7th inning, the Scots trailed by one but would get a jolt to the offense when pinch hitter Jon Jensen drilled a one out double to left center field. After the second out of the inning, the Scots were down to their final out of the game when leadoff hitter Rider Minnick drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Down a run and down to their final out, senior left fielder Randy Cain stepped to the plate and launched a double to score both Jensen and Minnick and give the Scots back their lead.
Senior relief pitcher Owen Mott then induced a ground ball to Minnick and a double play erased the Bulldogs base runner in the 7th inning, securing the Scots’ win. The Johnson to Jodrey to Carter twin kill kept the Scots atop the league standings at 5-0, and 2-0.
Highland will begin the Cardington series on Friday before hosting Ontario on Saturday in non-league play.
