Two Highland pitchers combined to no-hit the Danville Blue Devils and keep the Highland Scots in the race for the 2021 KMAC Championship with a 9-1 win on the road Wednesday night.
Junior Cooper Merckling (2-0) started for the Scots and 4 and ⅔ strong innings for the visiting Scots. Merckling struck 9 Devil hitters and only allowed one run, while not allowing a Danville hit. Senior sidearmer Owen Mott finished the game for the Scots by going 2 and ⅓ innings out of the bullpen. Mott struck out 5 Danville hitters and protected the no-hitter by only allowing the Danville offense one base runner in his outing.
Juniors Zach Pinkerton and Jon Jensen provided the offensive spark for the Scots’ offense. Jensen scored 3 runs as he went 2 for 2 with 2 doubles and a walk, while the centerfielder Pinkerton added 5 RBIs through two sacrifice flies and a 3-run blast late in the game. It was Pinkerton’s 2nd homerun on the season.
The Scots offense continued to hum as the Scot Boys collected 13 hits in the game. Third baseman KJ Johnson had a 3-hit day, as the senior hit a single, a double, and a triple. Rider Minnick, Randy Cain, Luke Cain, Wyatt Groves, Blake Jodrey, and Cooper Merckling also joined the hit parade with base hits in the game.
The Scots were active on the base paths as they swiped 6 bases against the home team.
Highland is scheduled to play Licking Valley, Danville, and Loudonville over the next three days.
